Louis Nawatny plotted land that he owned in the area in 1882 and name Louisville after himself. There is no connection to Kentucky, and this is why locals pronounce it Louis Ville. As throughout the area, coal mining was the initial economic activity beginning with the Welch Mine in 1877. Coal mining continued until the 1950’s.
Old Town Main Street has many historic buildings and a robust number of restaurants, retail shops and other businesses. There is a weekly Farmers Market in the Summer and a long list of festivals and street fairs.
Louisville features the Coal Creek Trail and the Davidson Mesa Trailhead for hikers and mountain bikers. You can also enjoy Hecla Lake and Harper Lake. Of course, all of Louisville enjoys stunning views of the Front Range.
