In 1871, a group of men from Chicago founded the town and named it the “Chicago-Colorado Colony”. The name was later changed to Longmont as a combination of nearby Long’s Peak and “mont” from the French word montagne for mountain.
Longmont’s original economic underpinnings were agricultural. Today, Longmont is home to many high-tech and medical-tech companies. The city is the provider of a fiber optic Internet service to its residents called NextLight.
The original Main Street is now home to restaurants, retail shops and small businesses. Longmont is also home to two well regarded craft beer breweries – Left Hand Brewery and Oskar Blues Brewery.
The city offers 1,500-plus acres of parks and open space complete with trail systems for residents to enjoy. Local favorites include Golden Ponds, McCall Lake, McIntosh Lake and the Union Reservoir.
