Before Monsanto, seeds were stored and sold to farmers and ranchers each year from the local seed company or seed cooperative. You didn’t need to advertise “organic” because they just were. No gene-infused seeds, just heritage seeds as produced by nature. The Barteldes Seed building was constructed to store seed in 1906. At 5-stories, it was a large country-wide seed wholesale facility. Seed is heavy, so the walls were designed to support 600-pounds of load per square foot. The building was converted into commercial office space and residential lofts in 1987 during the early days of LoDo. The Barteldes Seed Lofts incorporate exposed brick walls and original floors in maintaining the historic character of the building’s heritage. Access to the roof adds appeal for owners. Funny and funky!
